From an opportunity to a report

Turning a move in the market into a brief.

An opportunity tells you a seat has opened. A report tells you what to do about it.

Building the brief

Open an opportunity and choose Build a report for this. The brief form opens with the company already set as the focus and the move recorded against it, so the research starts from the event rather than from a blank market.

Fill in the rest as you would any brief — what the report should find, and the market it lives in. The opportunity gives us the anchor; you still have to say what a good answer looks like.

What that buys you

Reports built from an opportunity carry the move with them, so the finished work opens with the context rather than the conclusion arriving without a reason. When a client asks why now, the answer is in the first paragraph.

When not to bother

Not every opportunity is worth a report. A move in a company you already know inside out, or one you cannot approach for relationship reasons, is a signal you read and dismiss. That is the monitor working, not failing — it is cheaper to skip a name than to miss one.

If a whole category is consistently not worth reading, untick it under Settings, then Your market rather than skipping it every week.
